Our annual
Ypres
walk this year concentrated upon the battles of 1914 and 1915.
The
following are a series of photographs taken on this tour.
Walking
the track along the canal bank towards the Bluff. Scene of major fighting
and mine warfare in 1915. One member of the group is less sure of her
footing than everyone else!
A
cemetery visit near Ravine Wood. The group of three cemeteries in this
area are not on the usual tourist trail. Most casualties here date from
1915 when the 5th Division held the sector.
When
you find a good hole you just have to go down it! Is this the troll under
the bridge? Actually a German bunker close to the Caterpillar Mine Crater.
Inspecting
German concrete. The roof is missing from post capture demolition, but the
remainder is in remarkably condition.
Same
bunker, but this shot shows the true purpose of the fortification. The
well like structure is the entrance to a German mine shaft - somewhere in the
Salient!
And
finally headstones in Bedford House cemetery. Visited for local interest
by one of the members of the group.
